A Strategic Partnership: Miles of Hope’s Unique Relationship with the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley

Miles of Hope (MOH) began as a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley (CFHV) in 2003, founded by Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok to raise funds exclusively for programs supporting people affected by breast cancer in the Hudson Valley. One of the primary advantages of starting as a donor-advised fund at CFHV was the reduced administrative burden. Unlike creating a separate foundation, we could operate under the Community Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status, eliminating the need for legal counsel and extensive paperwork.

In our first year, we raised $150,000, and by 2004, we established Miles of Hope as an independent nonprofit. CFHV continues to work behind the scenes, serving as MOH’s administrative office, providing essential day-to-day operational support. They manage the distribution of grants to healthcare facilities and handle accounting responsibilities, including quarterly expenditure reporting, which has been invaluable in maintaining our financial integrity.

Over the years, our relationship with CFHV has remained strong. This enduring connection speaks to CFHV’s commitment to collaboration and its ability to adapt to the evolving needs of our community. By leveraging CFHV’s resources and expertise, we have minimized duplication of services and are thriving with just a four-person staff. Their focus on efficiency aligns with our goals, allowing us to facilitate philanthropy without excessive administrative overhead.

CFHV has also played a key role in administering the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Scholarship Fund, which has awarded a total of $201,900 in scholarships since its creation. In the latest cycle, 19 students received $40,500 in scholarships, selected from 221 applicants. This not only highlights our commitment to supporting education but reflects the impact of CFHV’s stewardship.

In addition to managing our endowment fund, CFHV recognized our need for updated technology when we were a fledgling nonprofit and provided a grant to purchase new computer software. Their investment in our operational capabilities has been instrumental in enhancing our effectiveness.

Moreover, CFHV has facilitated the collection of patient testimonials from healthcare navigators, allowing us to effectively communicate the impact of our support services. These testimonials are vital for raising awareness and demonstrating the tangible difference our programs make in the lives of those we serve.

CFHV has been an invaluable ambassador for MOH, helping us increase our outreach and awareness. Their deep understanding of the Hudson Valley’s diverse communities, coupled with strong relationships with local leaders, has been essential in connecting us with individuals who need our services.

CFHV is a well-run organization with a strong track record of financial stewardship. The funds they manage have a tangible positive impact throughout the region. We are immensely grateful for our partnership with CFHV and are confident that it has been a strategic decision that has benefited our organization. Together, we are making a significant difference in the lives of Hudson Valley residents affected by breast cancer. Your support through CFHV is not just a donation; it’s an investment in a thriving, compassionate community.

“From reducing administrative burdens to managing our grants and scholarship funds, CFHV’s expertise has allowed us to focus on our mission while ensuring financial integrity.”
