Community Foundations Awards Over $40,000 to Area Teachers

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Through the generosity of individual and corporate donors, Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley has awarded 29 area teachers over $40,000 to enhance classrooms throughout the region. Grants will fund training, purchases of cutting-edge equipment and innovative projects.

“Now in its 32nd year, the Partnership in Education Grants demonstrate the collective power of Community Foundations. While we are thrilled to facilitate these awards, it is the generosity of many donors that make this possible,” said March S. Gallagher, Esq., President & CEO. “By pooling together the resources of thoughtful individuals and organizations, the Foundations is able to leverage their giving into real impacts for our community.”

The Community Foundations estimates reach of these grants to improve classroom learning for over 6,400 students in the Hudson Valley.

Grants were made through the following programs:
  • The Fund for Excellence in Education grants for special projects and professional development for teachers Pre-K – 12, at public, parochial and private/independent schools;
  • Taconic IPA Science Education Grants fund teachers to expand learning in the sciences through acquisition of classroom and laboratory science equipment in Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties;
  • Verizon Foundation STEM Grants fund science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) projects, activities and equipment;
  • The Dennis J. Markle Community Service Awards granting community service projects; and
  • The David Kennon Moody Award for teaching writing.

“Each year our grant committees get to see firsthand the passion, dedication and creativity of area teachers,” said Cristin McPeake, Director of Programs. “The applications we receive demonstrate the deep commitment and pride these educators take in delivering meaningful educational experiences.”

The Community Foundations staff and Board of Trustees congratulate the 2017 winners:
